A risk assessment is a process to identify potential hazards and analyze what could happen if a hazard occurs.

For each hazard there are many possible scenarios that could unfold depending on timing, magnitude and location of the hazard.

As you conduct the risk assessment, look for potential problem areas that could contribute to a hazardous exposure incident. Vulnerabilities include deficiencies in location specific safety plans, employee training, enviromental controls, work practice controls and removal of hazardous waste by licensed transporters. These deficiencies may contribute to the severity of injuries if an incident occurs. For example, an employee that is not properly trained on potetntial health hazards, may not understand the importance of personal protective equipment when exposed bodily fluids.
